Gelcoat | What is gelcoat?
A gelcoat is a smooth, resin-rich layer of polyester that forms the outer surface of a reinforced moulded part. A good gelcoat eliminates the need for further finishing of the moulded part and reduces maintenance. The gelcoat has three main functions: firstly, it is used to protect the underlying reinforced layers against the elements, chemical attack, etc. Secondly, the gelcoat serves to enhance the appearance of the surface. Among other things, the gelcoat provides a good gloss, conceals the reinforcement and covers the air bubbles that are always present in the laminate.
