A gelcoat resin has different properties to a laminating resin. Generally speaking, therefore, a different type of resin or resin mixture is used for gelcoat than for building up laminate. Either a special, ready-to-use gelcoat resin is applied, or a laminating resin is used provided that additives (such as thixotropic agents or flexible mixing resins) are added. The main properties that a gelcoat resin must possess are rapid curing, a certain degree of elasticity and resistance to water, chemicals and weathering. Gelation | What is gelation?
Gel time is the time between the addition of the hardener to the resin and the time when the liquid (or liquid resin) begins to show pseudo-elastic properties.
Gelcoat | What is gelcoat?
A gelcoat is a smooth, resin-rich layer of polyester that forms the outer surface of a reinforced moulded part. A good gelcoat eliminates the need for further finishing of the moulded part and reduces maintenance. The gelcoat has three main functions: firstly, it is used to protect the underlying reinforced layers against the elements, chemical attack, etc. Secondly, the gelcoat serves to enhance the appearance of the surface. Among other things, the gelcoat provides a good gloss, conceals the reinforcement and covers the air bubbles that are always present in the laminate. Finally, the gelcoat ensures that the moulded part can be coloured evenly. For more information, see; https://v-sure.eu/products/polyester/polyester-gelcoat/
Gelling | What is gelling?
Gelling is the first stage of hardening of a resin after the addition of a hardener. This process is irreversible.
Gelling phase | What is gelling phase?
The gelling phase is one of the phases polyester resin goes through. The polyester resin successively goes through the liquid phase, the gelatinous phase, the rubbery phase and finally the cured phase.
General purpose resin | What is general purpose resin?
In general purpose resins or orthophthalic acid resins, orthophthalic acid is the most important component. These polyester resins possess reasonable mechanical properties and are reasonably water and chemical resistant. for more info, see: https://v-sure.eu/polyester-resin-500-g-laminating-resin-liquid-polyester-500-g
Glass mat | What is glass mat?
Glass mat (chopped strand mat) is the most commonly used reinforcing material in the fabrication of polyester using the hand lay-up method. The short lengths of glass fibre are arranged criss-cross and overlapping, and are bonded together by a binder. Both powder-bonded and emulsion-bonded glass mats are available. For more information, see: https://v-sure.eu/products/fibre-reinforcement/glass-mat-fiberglass/
Glass reinforcement | What is glass reinforcement?
For an explanation of this term, please refer to glass fibre reinforced plastics. These are glass fibre-based reinforcement materials.
Glass yarn | What is glass yarn?
Glass yarn consists of very long fibres that have been twisted together. When glass yarn is woven, the result is a glass fabric.
Glass-rubber transition temperature | What is glass-rubber transition temperature?
The glass-rubber transition temperature is the temperature at which an amorphous thermoplastic transitions from a hard, rigid, glass-like state to a flexible, softer rubber-like state.
Gloss casting | What is gloss casting?
Gloss casting is an entirely new technique, which allows practically anyone to make colourful workpieces according to predefined contours. Here, each workpiece has an individual character. Gloss casting uses a mirror-curing, crystal-clear epoxy resin. This epoxy resin can be coloured at will by adding pigments. The individual colours are cast in well-defined fields. Deformation ranges from written plaques to sophisticatedly shaped house numbers, decorative objects and large-format workpieces. Even when making a duplicate of an existing motif, each copy will be distinguished by its own character. for more info see: https://v-sure.eu/liquid-epoxy-varnish-epoxy-coating-transparant-5-kg
Gravel filter | What is a gravel filter?
A gravel filter is a filter used to purify water in ponds and swimming pools. Gravel filters, sponge filters or filter cloths have such large openings that the fine, turbidity-causing particles pass through them. These so-called coarse filters can only be effective when used in conjunction with flocculants (such as aluminium sulphate, for example). These flocculants are stirred into the water and cause the fine, turbidity-causing particles to clump together into larger particles, so that they can be collected. To filter out the finest particles, a gravel filter must be used.
Gutter coating | What is gutter coating?
A gutter coating is a coating applied to a zinc gutter.
