What is PU paint?

PU paint is a paint composed of polyurethane. Polyurethane chemistry was invented in the 1930s by Dr. Otto Bayer and has become one of the most widely used lacquers.

Liquid lacquers consist of several components, the binder, admixtures, pigments, solvents, etc. Each part contributes to the functionality of the lacquer. PU is a binder in the same way as epoxy, acrylic or alkyd resin. In addition, PU also functions as an admixture where the paint has scratch resistance, elasticity and material properties to be used in both indoor and outdoor applications.

PU paint properties

Because PUs are put together in such a way that they combine both hard and soft properties, they are ideal for paint applications. You have them both as 1K and 2K systems. So PU paint is perfect for protecting many substrates and various types of wood. A polyurethane lacquer is particularly scratch-resistant and is also slightly pliable which ensures a durable result. We supply solvent-based PU paints. These systems are highly resistant to dilute acids and alkalis as well as heat and cold. Thanks to their UV resistance, they do not yellow.

You can apply polyurethane lacquer with a brush or roller and you can also spray it, if you add a thinner.

Applications with PU paint

You can get a PU paint as a clear coat or varnish or colored in RAL colors. The PU varnish dries quickly and has excellent flow properties when applied with a brush or roller, leaving no streaks. You can apply it to many types of wood, although you sometimes have to be careful with exotic types, especially if it is an exterior application.

For indoor applications you can apply it to almost any type of wood. A PU paint can be applied in the kitchen and bathroom but also in a laboratory or pharmacy. A clear PU paint is specially developed for maximum protection of your guitar or other musical instrument.

In the automotive sector, the demands on paint are incredibly high. Protection against scratches, stone chips or the paintwork becoming matt and dull are unacceptable. Scratches are avoided due to the elasticity of the lacquer and damage from stone chips due to its hardness. In this industry, PU paints provide the best solution. Thanks to their flexible composition, they provide the best balance between hardness and elasticity. Furthermore, water absorption and the vapor permeability of polyurethane are an absolute plus.
