What is polyurethane made of?
PU or PUR is short for polyurethane. It is made by making a bond with a polyol and an isocyanate. Mixing both of these together creates a chemical reaction called polymerization. These are the alcohol groups that bond together with oxygen and hydrogen. The great advantage of PU is that they can be formed from tough elastic to rock hard like a casting resin, a coating or a foam. And this each time as a 1 or a 2 component.
Is polyurethane harmful to your health?
The newest generation of PUs are quite harmless, but professional processing of PUR requires training from 2023. This is partly because some isocyanates were labeled as suspicious in the past. Once cured, most PUs are harmless to health.
What are the specific properties of polyurethane?
Because most PUs are somewhat flexible, these products are very pliable, abrasion-resistant and therefore also extremely strong. Thanks to the infinite possibilities of options to adjust the different hardness and elasticity, you find PU in various products and applications worldwide. For example insulation foam and sheets, tires and rubber soles, interior of cars and boats. In the textile industry, PU is often used as a coating to make fabrics waterproof. And also in the construction industry to pour seamless floors or make them waterproof.
What is a polyurethane floor?
A polyurethane floor is a plastic floor, which makes existing or new to be treated substrates seamless and completely waterproof.
The advantages of polyurethane is that it is UV-resistant, scratch-resistant and completely seamless and waterproof. This makes PU cast floors ideal for use in both residential and industrial applications.
Added additives provide additional anti-slip or material properties required by the specific application, such as trailer flooring.
PU floors come in two varieties
On one hand, you have the PU cast floor. Here we are talking about a two-component liquid resin which is poured over an existing substrate such as concrete, screed or wood. The layer thickness varies between 2 and 5 mm. This layer is self-leveling and thus levels itself to the surface. This gives you a beautiful, tight a seamless floor. Available in endless colors and combinations, both for the bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and living room.
There is also a one-component variant, which we regard more as a kind of paint. With this you roll over your concrete or screed and a seamless and waterproof layer of a few microns is formed. Ideal to treat your garage floor with. Because one of the many possibilities is the chemical resistance of this PU floor paint to solvents, gasoline, greasers, etc.
For each of these PUs, there is a variant with improved UV resistance. So that you can apply them both indoors and outdoors.
