Casting a table or table top with epoxy casting resin

Supplies:

• Epoxy casting resin with hardener
• Hardwood table top
• Sandpaper (80-120 grit)
• Masking tape
• Sanding block
• Steel wool
• Cleaning agent (e.g. acetone)
• Paint brushes
• Paint roller
• Paint trowel
• Any dye or glitter

How to use

• Clean the table top thoroughly and make sure it is completely free of dust and grease. For example, use acetone and a clean cloth for this purpose.


• Lightly sand the table top using sandpaper with a grit size of 80-120. This ensures that the surface is rough enough for the epoxy to adhere well.


• Tape off the table top with masking tape. This is especially useful if you want to prevent the epoxy from running onto certain parts of the top.


• Mix the epoxy according to the instructions on the package. You mix the two components in the correct ratio. Keep in mind that you will have to pour over once into a new mixing cup before you finally start pouring, so make sure everything is ready before you start mixing.

• Add any dye or glitter to the epoxy casting resin if you want the tabletop to be a certain color. Use a paint brush or paint roller to do this.


• Use a paint trowel to apply the epoxy to the tabletop. Work in thin layers to allow the epoxy to cure evenly. Let each coat cure completely before applying the next. This may take several hours to a day, depending on the thickness of the layer and the ambient temperature.


• Once all coats are applied, you can finish the tabletop with steel wool or a fine sandpaper (220-320 grit).


• To improve uv-resistance, it is best to apply a colorless varnish or clear lacquer over the epoxy.
