Disadvantages of a PU cast floor

A PU cast floor is a beautiful and timeless solution for your floor.
Unfortunately, there are some disadvantages associated with this floor.

What are the disadvantages of PU floor?

  • PU cast floors rather have a soft touch, which is why they do not have the highest wear resistance. So for industrial floors, where they are subject to high levels of stress, we do not recommend the use of PU. PU cast floors are not suitable for industrial environments.

  • The UV-resistant version is slightly more expensive compared to the standard PU cast floor or an epoxy cast floor.

  • You should apply the PU cast floor on a surface that is as dry as possible, since a PU cast floor is sensitive to humidity while being applied.

  • If you need to apply multiple coats, you must wait between layers for them to dry. This takes extra time.

  • If you need to apply a scraping layer, to smooth out your surface, you need to sand this scraping layer. For this, it is best to use a good sander. Rental or purchase of this machine should be included in your total price.

  • Some primers and top coats contain a solvent and this can sometimes smell strong, so wear an appropriate mask.

  • A PU cast floor, even with the strong top coat, still remains a bit scratch-sensitive. Handle the PU cast floor only in domestic applications. Secure the legs of your chairs or couch with felt padding so they are less likely to scratch. Your cat or dog's nails can also cause small scratches. This is why you should apply a hard wear-resistant top coat. However, when you drop something sharp on your cast floor, a piece is not going to come out and look damaged.

  • Pay special attention to very light colors like white or off-white. The slightest dust or dirt, hanging from the soles of your shoes, can be seen on the floor. It can also leave stains that you can't get rid of with ordinary detergent. Only make use of mild cleaners here, because the PU cast floor is soft and therefore will easily get damaged. Black rubber soles also leave marks on your light floor. You can counter this by using special floor protection products or ask your friends who come to visit to take off their shoes.

  • Of course, the price of PU cast floor can be a disadvantage if you are going to compare it with other flooring materials. But if, with the help of technical advice, you can do this job yourself, you will already save a lot of money that way. The best option is that you can take a short workshop, which will give you confidence in processing these products. Good advice and excellent preparation are worth a lot!
